Below is a summary of general economic variables for Puerto Rico as of fiscal year 2008.
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the economic variables that convey a view of the overall composition of the economy. The GDP captures the total production generated inside Puerto Rico during a given year. Puerto Rico has a diversified economy with a large manufacturing sector (41.2%). Other important sectors in Puerto Rico are Services (39.7%), and Government (9.4%).
Throughout the years, Puerto Rico has seen an increase in the educational level of its workforce. Puerto Rico has an educated and prepared workforce, a fact that is reflected on the percentage of the workforce that has one or more years of higher education; in 2008, this percentage stood at 56.12%.

In Puerto Rico, employment is distributed throughout all the sectors of the economy. Among the sectors that employ the highest share of the country’s workforce are the Government (29.1%), Trade, Transportation, Storage and Public Services (17.8%) and Professional Services and Business (10.6%).
